Westwerk Kaiserbad Leipzig I Leipzig Free Tours The city of Leipzig, long known since the Middle Ages for its fairs and markets, lies in the Saxon Lowlands at the junction of the Weisse Elster and the Pleisse rivers. This setting on important trade routes gave Leipzig considerable commercial power, and after being granted the privilege of holding fairs, it became the leading city in Saxony after Dresden. Leipzig – City of Battle. City of Trade.

2021-11-08T16:48:31+01:00

By Carlos S. Francis   The beauty of every city has a tale to tell. Paris. An unruly people. Emperor Napoleon III commissioned Baron Haussmann (1809-1891) to design a new city. New squares. New parks. And broad boulevards. Beautiful. And far easier to stamp out [...]

The University that brought down a regime

2021-03-15T14:37:30+01:00

University of Leipzig with St Pauls Church © Universität Leipzig by Carlos S. Francis For more than 700 years St Paul's University Church, the heart of the University of Leipzig (1409), had survived. The Thirty Years War (1618-48) that killed 20 percent of all Germans, the Napoleonic Wars (1803-1815), and even the ferocious Anglo-American air raid on December 4, 1943 that showered bombs on the city, had not touched it. The bombs slid off the steeply sloping roof and the interior of the church was untouched. The brave people of Leipzig threw water at the roaring flames and [...]

Honecker's Guest House of the Council of Ministers and Politburo of the GDR Erich Honecker was a regular at the former "Guest House of the Council of Ministers and Politburo of the GDR" when it was opened in 1968 by SED head of state Walter Ulbricht. In addition to Ulbricht, successor Erich Honecker also made guest appearances at least twice a year during the Leipziger Messe. Other GDR figures and foreign guests came, too. In 1983, a billion dollar loan for the almost bankrupt GDR was negotiated by Honecker and Bavarian Prime Minister Franz Josef Strauss in a bomb-proof [...]

Top things to do on a trip to Germany

2021-03-15T15:09:56+01:00

As a local, I am offering some insights on what might be most interesting, delicious or exciting on a trip to Germany. Arriving in Berlin, you will be overwhelmed by the sheer size of the city and what's on offer. Although a classic, I do recommend eating “Currywurst”. One of the best places to do so is Curry36 in Kreuzberg. For a great view while sipping some cocktails during the evening, head to Andel’s hotel’s bar Loft14 in Prenzlauer Berg. You will have a great view towards Fersehturm from this spot that not many people actually know about (not even Berliners). [...]
